- Nanjing Road is the longest shopping “mile” of the
world and one of its busiest.
There are well over a
million people go shopping there daily. The
street is home to over 650 well known brands such as
Tiffany’s and naturally all the fast food stuff from
McDonalds, KFC and more, actually, it’s a puzzle how
someone can eat this kind of food when there is the
great Chinese food around. Shopping malls,
boutiques, cloth stores, jewelry shops and all kind
imaginable stores are around over a length of around
6km partitioned into Nanjing Road –east and west- .
This goes on since about 150 years, the road was the
first dedicated shopping district in Shanghai.
Both parts of the
road stretch into People's Square, a huge park,
actually People’s is at every bigger Chinese city.
The part of the road stretching up the Bund to the
Square through Huangpu District is Nanjing East,
while the part through the Jing' an District is
Nanjing West. Locals often refer to Nanjing East as
"Nanjing Road" since this was the original part of
the road before it was extended. |
|
The two
different periods when the road was built is
reflected in the ambience which has a more
older view at the east part. There are the
city's oldest department stores, hotels and
restaurants such as Peace Hotel at the bund,
a Shanghai icon by itself. From the upper
floors of the Peace hotel is a breathtaking
view of the Bund and Pudong. It’s mostly a
“walking street”, closed for traffic and in
between is the the Central Market with
plenty of electronic goods, gadgets and real
bargains.
|
Shanghai Nanjing Road West is rather
“up market” shopping for luxury
designer ware, jewelry and other
items on the upper end of any price
scale. New, trendy and flashy
shopping plazas are there, hotels
and some old buildings morphed into
office buildings, also the Shanghai
Exhibition Centre is there.
This
historic look and feel is fading
since new hotels and shopping malls
open at both parts of the road.
Nanjing Road could be a sightseeing
trip by itself because the
Shanghai Museum, Jing’an Temple
(over 1700 years old), Beijing Opera
and Shanghai Grand Opera Palace are
also located there.
An evening stroll
down to the Bund is one of the best
things to do in Shanghai, stopping
at restaurants, open air bars and
listening to the street musicians,
don’t forget to drop some money. |
