The
Shanghai restaurant scene
offers a large variety
of restaurants for the
gourmet and also for the one who is not so sophisticated,
means bite the burger, pasta, pizza, chili con carne etc.
Countless restaurants, bars and crossover
populate the
different quarters. Chinese, Thai, Mexican, French, Italian,
Spanish, almighty!! even the burger junk and many
other food is offered in sometimes quite expensive setting.
As a
matter of fact we tested it ...don't eat "western
food" outside of a good hotel. Eat
Chinese food, that's usually ok. |
|
The people try to offer you
western food if you like but mostly they don't know
how to prepare this, this is especially relevant in night
spots area with a lot of restaurants and bars. The result is
stomach problems.
The
restaurant e.g. where we took the picture left offers
excellent western food it's not cheap at all, but we only
can suggest it, but it's a thin line to figure out the good
stuff from the other.
China
is well known for excellent
Chinese food
offered in all kind of
restaurants
around the country,
low priced exotic food selections, tasty herbs,
spices, served
maybe just on the open roadside restaurant or maybe
in a stylish setting.
If you prefer seafood
and
some
nightlife
the
Zhapu
Lu Food Street
is the
right destination.
Since
the Shanghai cuisine originates from the coastal
provinces and the sea around, restaurants are serving fish, eel, crab
and chicken with some alcohol, "drunken" with
spirits and usually served raw. Salted meats and
preserved vegetables are also commonly used to spice
up the dish. Another ingredient of the Shanghai
cuisine is sugar…Sweet and sour spare ribs, Shanghai
hairy crab, "eight treasure" duck, "drunken"
chicken, braised eel and yellow fish are the most
popular dishes, slurp the noodle soup, it's sooooo good.
If you like some real
great Chinese style seafood and other culinary
delights
the choice is along
Zhapu Lu Road. During daytime and evening
everything is dedicated to food, the street is six
kilometers long and reaches almost down to the Bund.
Nowhere you are
virtually closer to the ocean than in Zhapu Lu
Street, full of Seafood restaurants and some
other are real exotic food. Early in the morning is
rush hour, the white capped cooks come to work and
the harbor girls go home after a night in the
massage and beauty parlors.
In 1907 the first cinema in China opened at Zhapu
Lu Street and the area was full with foreigners.
In the thirties came together with the Japanese
invasion the seafood restaurants. The Japanese built a
Taoist temple in the Zhapu Lu Street and started
the seafood markets. However, this didn’t last long.
With the Communists came no money and no food; most
of the premises closed. This is different today, it
bubbles and roars in the restaurants, pools are filled with
all kind of fishes and other creatures from the sea. The
ocean is close in the Zhapu Lu Street but geographically
rather further away, it takes about one hour down the
Huangpu River, before the Yangtze River reaches the sea.
Most sea creatures
sold
in the restaurants are imported,
around the Chinese coast most
fishes are gone since every year
several billion tons of junk are
thrown in the river and carried
to the sea finally killing most
species in the water.
Anyway, cooking and food is very
important in Shanghai and
China during imperial times it
was one of the main arts equal
ranking with ink painting,
calligraphy and other.
In a Chinese restaurant food
is served in buffet style
means all dishes, appetizers,
main course, dessert are placed
on the table more or less at the
same time and everyone takes
what he or she likes.
The Chinese restaurants at Zhapu
Lu Food Street offer large
assortments of sea food, It is
the variety of sea food which
makes the Zhapu Lu Street so
popular in Shanghai.
Around the China coastal waters
are or rather were over 3,000
marine creatures, just
imagine the number of seafood
dishes when all this is somehow
prepared in the Chinese cuisine.
Actually today almost all
seafood is imported to China and
Shanghai.
The rich taste of Chinese
seafood delicacies can be at
best experienced at Zhapu Lu
Street. You could eat
yourself “through” at this food
street in Shanghai for several
month by eating a different
culinary delight every day. For
other Chinese food have a look
here.
China together with Japan
probably has the largest seafood
industry in the world. Fresh
water and sea water products are
widely available but many times
not so cheap.
The international
tourist invasion of the last few years had a very
positive impact to the |

Chinese cooking is served in countless Shanghai
restaurants, it's the right environment for
people who love Chinese food. But Shanghai also has
plenty of other restaurants serving French, Italian,
German, Russian, American, Japanese and southeastern
Asian food.
Despite of the foreign restaurants, the local
restaurant scene is naturally dominated by the
Shanghai school of cooking, whose chefs are
choosy about the ingredients and and continuous try
new cooking techniques and combinations, resulting
in real delicacies especially variants of food from the sea and
rivers. The food streets at Huanghe Road, Yunnan Road and Zhapu Road are
favorites with visitors. |

The CCTV news
channel ran ''a few

Wang said. Local media and
the popular Chinese news
portal Sina.com have since
followed up with their own
stories, some with photos of
the meal.
Wang said New
Female organized the private
meal after noting the
popular outrage over the use
of two female university
students at the upscale
Japanese Hefeng Village
Huaishi Cuisine restaurant
complex in Kunming, also a
city in southwestern China.
Serving food
on a man has raised a storm
of new criticism, much of it
expressed online after Chongqing residents learned
of the event last year, Wang
said.

''I remember
one comment, saying this is
OK for women, but not for
men. As you know,
traditionally men's position
in society is above that of
women,'' said Wang, who is a
man. ''But this (meal) is a
kind of criticism. You don't
want to insult the women.''
Senior staff
members at the Hefeng
Village
say they stopped serving
sushi on naked women after
the story came to light. The
restaurant said it sold
meals on women, who were
decorated with shells and
stones, in keeping with a
Japanese culinary tradition
|
|
Meals there
would cost about 1,000 yuan
($124).
Unlike the
restaurant in Kunming, New
Female did not sell tickets
to the meal or involve the
public in any way, Wang
said. He said the man
involved was chosen from 43
male models who tried out
for the volunteer job. The
film cost about 4,000 yuan.
The female
diners, who were watched
by more than 10 magazine
staff members, it
took about 40
minutes to relax with the
man, nicknamed

to the Chongqing

When one woman
asked the man if he was

magazine has no plans to
repeat the event, Wang said.

The food in the
restaurant is
called "essence of
the golden Buddha,"
"The rebirth of the

"jasmine blossom

or "search for

After all, there
is a "jasmine

and in the desert
treasure is sheep's
testicles in a curry
bed.
"Chinese people
eat anything with
four legs except
tables and
anything that flies
except airplanes,"
is a well-known
proverb.
But a penis
restaurant is simply
unusual. Only
two years ago opened
the "Goulizhuang" in
the Dongsishitiao
Street in Peking. It
became a quick hit
under the wealthy
Chinese, today there
are alone in the capital, four
branches. The chain
even expanded
abroad, into the
Chinatown of
Atlanta.

Who says, the
Chinese always copy?
There is
something brand new
in the restaurant
scene, the
Chinese restaurant
is run by robots,
yes you read this
correct. Why? they
are never tired or
impatient as a
waiter a
receptionist or as a
restaurant
entertainer,
actually its a
Chinese buffet
restaurant where the
robots serve the
tray. The
first Chinese robot
restaurant in Jinan
is a exceptional
success. Probably
not primarily
because of the
steaming stew
offered by the
restaurant, the
magnet are the
robots which are
doing the job, real
robots not fake. The
Dalu Chinese buffet
restaurant in Jinan in Shandong
province is the
first restaurant in
the country to
replace the human by
robot.
A little similar
to the "Star Wars"
saga in appearance
they move around
quickly and always
do a good job, the
robots never get
tired. More than a
dozen restaurant
robots are in the
restaurant serving
up to around 100
people as
entertainers,
waiters and
receptionists. When
you enter the dimly
lit restaurant with
futuristic neon
lights, is
immediately greeted
with a "welcome" by
a robot lady
moving the
electronic eyelids
in sync.
Each of the robot
staff in this
Chinese buffet
restaurant has a motion
detector to make the
robot stop if
someone or something
gets close. Guests
take the desired
dish from the robot
food tray. Meanwhile
a entertainment
robot “turn on” the
guest. |
